RUB Bauwesen CompEng

From 25th till 27th of October Computational Engineering Master's course in cooperation with the CompEng student council arranged a very special weekend for CompEng students to visit the second largest city in Germany, Hamburg. We started our trip early in the morning of Friday October 25., with a group of 40 people including most of CompEng new students, some senior students and also some CompEng staff. After driving around 350 km with a short stop for breakfast we arrived in Hamburg at 11 a.m. Our Youth hostel was located so close to the port of Hamburg with a very beautiful view over the harbor. On Friday afternoon the students had time to explore the city themselves. Around 6 p.m. we met each other in the Hostel and had dinner together. On Friday evening after dinner, it was the best time to get to know Hamburg’s night life! Everyone was free to follow his own plan and thus the group split up. Some people went to the city to see further tourist attractions such as Miniatur Wunderland (the largest model railway in the world) and some other went to the bars near our hostel. The famous area in Hamburg called Reeperbahn was not so far from our hostel. At the end of the night a big group of students and CompEng staff met each other and had a walk around this area to get to know one of the Hamburg's highlights and enjoyed the evening in an Irish pub.

Saturday morning after breakfast, we did a harbor boat tour at 10 O'clock. We went around the port of Hamburg and observed the container loading stations, and after that through the channels of the storage city. During our stay in Hamburg, we had most of the time sunny weather with around 16 degree temperature. After finishing the harbor tour, we got on our bus and did a city tour. An English spoken tour guide accompanied us. We drove through the city and the residence near Alster where some famous people live. We saw some famous churches, buildings and also a mosque in Hamburg. We had a stop by the Alster lake and made a memorable group photo. In the evening we had dinner in our hostel and then everyone was free to decide where to go or what to discover in Hamburg.

Sunday was the last day of our trip. So we checked out of our hostel at 10 a.m. and took our bus to go to Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial which commemorates the over 100,000 people who were imprisoned in the largest concentration camp in northwest Germany during World War II. This camp was operated by the Nazis from 1938 to 1945. The goal of our visit to the Concentration Camp was to learn more about the dark part of German history. After almost 2 hours tour inside the camp we started our journey back home.

This trip was a good opportunity for our students to know CompEng family better than before and also they enjoyed their time all together in Hamburg. Hopefully there will be more such events organized by CompEng office! ;)

At the end, we would like to say a big THANK YOU to the CompEng student council, the General Students’ Committee AStA, the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering for making this trip possible with their financial support. We also thank our CompEng students, who joined us in this trip and made it more unforgettable for us! :)
