Clash of Cultures: CompEng Graduate Analyzes German Lifestyle

Ever since the Masters' Programme Computational Engineering was launched in 2000, many students have made the decision to study at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Leaving the university, graduates of the programme achieved advanced positions at research institutions or specialized companies.

Due to the international focus and the various focal points of the programme, we rejoice in meeting people from all over the world and hear stories about their experiences in Germany. These individual stories from our alumni are always inspiring to hear.  Relating to this, we are happy to share the story of a graduate from our institution, Dr.-Ing. Gagan Syal.

Moving from India to Germany , he studied Computational Engineering and completed his studies in 2008. Following his passion for the German automobile industry, he wrote his doctor theses at Daimler AG Ulm and KIT Karlsruhe. Currently Dr.-Ing. Gagan Syal works at Mercedes Benz R&D in India. Beside his scientific education, the engineer gained interesting intercultural experiences during his stay in Germany. Inspired by this, he discovered his talent for writing and published his book “Indian Curry with German Beer” under his alias "Dr. G.". In a humorous way, he refers to cultural differences he faced as an Indian during his stay in Germany.  The book also includes a handy guide for Indians living in Germany to prevent displeasing misunderstandings and a distinctive cultural clash. Among his peers and friends, Gagan Syal enjoys his reputation as a “German Culture Guru”.

Even if the architecture of the Ruhr-University Bochum will always remain a mystery to the Engineer, gaining experience while spending time abroad will always be a great opportunity for students all over the world. Following this, his cultural "shock" experiences have to be seen in the most positive way. We are looking forward to hear more exiting stories of our alumni in the future, which will be shared on our website.
