RUB Bauwesen CompEng

The year 2017 is slowly coming to an end, yet the start of the current winter semester marks a new beginning for around 50 CompEng students. From over 1500 applicants, who went through a complex selection procedure, they are the lucky candidates who were admitted. This year’s students come from over 20 countries, such as India, Pakistan, Myanmar, Mexico, Turkey, Uzbekistan or Nigeria; and we are happy about such a big diversity in the current intake.

The official welcome ceremony started traditionally with a typical German breakfast buffet, and a warm welcome by the General Coordinator, Dipl.-Ing. Jörg Sahlmen. He gave a short historical overview about Bochum and the Ruhr area as well as about the rich cultural background.

After the enrolment and other formalities which were organized through the coordination office, Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Tom Schanz (Chair of Foundation Engineering Soil and Rock Mechanic), on behalf of the  Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, welcomed the new CompEng Students of 2017 to Ruhr-University Bochum. Besides Prof. Schanz, other CompEng professors and lecturers presented a short introduction to the courses to give an idea what the newcomers have to expect during their first semester, among them Dr.-Ing. Dipl.-Inform. Karlheinz Lehner (Chair of Computing in Engineering), Prof. Dr.-Ing. Daniel Balzani (Chair of Continuum Mechanics), Jun. Prof. Dr. Andreas Vogel (Workgroup High Performance Computing in the Engineering Sciences), Dr.-Ing. Arash Alimardani Lavasan (Chair of Foundation Engineering Soil and Rock Mechanic), M.Sc. Faranak Faghihi (Chair of Steel, Lightweight and Composite Construction), M.Sc. Vladislav Gudzulic, (Institute for Structural Mechanics), Dipl. Ing. Ghina Jezdan (Chair Analysis and Geometry).
