RUB Bauwesen CompEng

IMG_9081On Friday, August 31st 2012, our group of VGU-exchange students had the chance to explore the Ruhr Area during a canoe trip. Travelling to Hattingen in the early morning to the starting point where the canoes were ready to be launched, the difficulties of paddling and the divisions for the canoes were discussed. After a brief instruction about the different kinds of currents, swirls and also the three waterslides we would have to pass, everyone was ready to start the trip.

After the first meters of paddling zigzag we were able to enjoy the nice landscape. Then, getting to the first waterslide everyone got excited. Five of six canoes made it, however…

Helping the three passengers of the capsized canoe back on board we carefully made our way further down the river in the direction of Bochum-Dahlhausen. With no further unexpected incidents and lots of luck with the stable weather conditions we arrived after three and a half hours at the finishing point at Essen-Horst.

Exhausted and longing for a hot drink to warm us up we entered a little restaurant to have original local lunch: “Pommes Currywurst”!

Refreshed and with new strength we were ready to start with the second part of the excursion: a ride with a covered wagon which took the group from Essen back to Hattingen - another adventure which helped to make this day an unforgettable experience for all participants and which definitely brought the group closer together.

Many thanks to the 'VGU-Konsortialverein' for providing the financial support to make this event possible!
