RUB Bauwesen CompEng

Review: Welcome Week 2015

On Wednesday October 14th Coordinator Dipl. Ing. Jörg Sahlmen and the CompEng Coordination Team welcomed the new intake to Ruhr-University Bochum. From over 1500 applicants who went through the programme's complex selection procedure, 45 students were admitted. This year's students come from over 20 different countries.

The Welcome Week started with an initial informal welcome breakfast where the student got to know each other, the CompEng Team and the Student Council. After the final enrolment formalities were completed, CompEng students from the higher semesters showed the newcomer around on campus.

Thursday was organized by the CompEng Student Council who took the newcomers to RUB Mensa for lunch and organized a trip to IKEA, a popular nearby furniture retailer. Since most of the students are staying in dormitory apartments, they were happy for the opportunity to purchase some useful and decorative stuff to feel more at home in their new surroundings.

After two informal days in the course of which the students made new friends and explored their new place of living and learning, it was about time that the professors were introduced: Friday started with the official welcome breakfast and a presentation of courses through the lecturers. The afternoon program was again more casual, as the CompEng Coordination Team and the Student Council took the newcomers to Bowling in Bochum's city centre.

The welcome week culminated in a trip to the Rewirpower Stadium, home of the local football club 'VFL Bochum', on Sunday. Here, the newcomers watched a football match of the at that time leading team of the second league. Unfortunately, however, VFL Bochum not only lost the game but also the lead. Still it was a great match day, and, all in all, an exciting and informative week for everyone!
