Excellence Initiative RUB

LOGO RUB

In June, the Excellence Initiative of the German Council of Science and Humanities and the German Research Foundation will again decide, which universities receive special support in the course of the funding programme from the federal government and the federal states in the framework of the excellence competition.

The first round, which has been completed already, focused exclusively on research; the universities were able to apply for so-called clusters - large thematic research projects. The RUB has submitted and received two excellence clusters (Cyber Security and Ruhr Explores Solvation). The second round is ongoing.

In 2016, 195 projects entered the race, 88 made it into the second round in 2017 and were re-evaluated. The contract was then awarded to a selection of 57 clusters, which received funding from January 2019.

The RUB now awaits the expert committee’s decision in June, rector Prof. Dr. Axel Schölmerich is confident that the university has good chances, not least because of the strong research performance of the RUB in recent years. The grant would apply from November 1, 2019 until the end of 2026, a total of seven years.

We are keeping our fingers crossed and hope that through a success in the competition, the RUB can strengthen and develop their research even more.
